Both Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes roost overnight on shallow ponds in the area. This gives them some protection against predators. This is one of two shallow ponds just outside the refuge entrance. Photographers typically assemble here before first light so as not to frighten the birds off. The ponds are perfect for sunrise since you face west and the sun comes up behind you. On this first morning, there were no cranes, only geese. Taken at
Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge.
