Stanley Brook School 1

Stanley Brook School 1

An abandoned rural school. Looks like there has been some recent restoration and maybe the community is using it for occasional events. In looking for some background online, I found little other than this letter from a concerned mother published in the 'Nelson Evening Mail', July, 1894.
To the editor - "Sir, months ago it was brought to the Stanley Brook Committee's notice that the school was infested with vermin. They told the schoolmaster to send home the dirty children, but not one of them has been sent home, amp; the school is getting worse. The creatures are actually crawling up the walls amp; desks, amp; when the children are writing their lessons they blow them off their slates.... the people of the Brook were talking about closing the school, syringing the walls, scrubbing the floor well, amp; not opening it again till the children were cleaned, but this dropped through amp; now nothing seems to be thought of the matter... Why it is disgraceful amp; abominable to think of, let alone having to put up with the thing."

I assume she is talking about head lice. Some things never change.
