The TranzAlpine train runs between Greymouth and Christchurch. We drove within site of the tracks for most of our crossing from west coast to east coast. I was hoping to at least get a glimpse of the train as we crossed the country. I stopped and hiked up to a hilltop to photograph the beautiful Waimakariri River valley. I heard a train whistle blow and then the rumble of an approaching train but could not see it yet. Could it be? Probably a freight train. Just in case, I positioned the tripod to capture whatever emerged. Luckily, it was the TranzAlpine train.
