Cromwell, located on Lake Dunstan, is the farthest New Zealand town from the sea. The small community of 4,000 is home to orchards and vineyards, artists and artisans. Looking across the water and up the street, you can see two large conical evergreen trees. Amazingly, these are two Giant Sequoia in the front yard of a little one-story bungalow. This is not uncommon on the South Island. Almost every town has a few specimen of either Giant Sequoia or California Redwood growing in the small yard of a house or a public park. All were planted around 150 years ago & with their height approaching the size of the trees in the U.S., which are thousands of years old, local botanists are wondering if they will surpass the U.S. giants.
