A 1950 census revealed that elms comprised more than 85% of the total tree population in Wichita. Superintendent Firsching was instrumental in developing a plan to diversify city trees. Between 1950 & 1962, 105 different tree species were planted. Each species representing no more than 10% of total number of trees planted; a philosophy that continues to this present day.
